FIRE PREVENTION.
SQUIRT PROPOSAL REJECTED.
At the last monthly meeting ot the Borough Council a letter was read from the agent of the Minimas Fire Extinguisher, submitting cost of installation of a service of these appliances tor fire fighting purposes and the matter was held over until last Monday night’s meeting tor consideration.
Cr Whibley moved that this Council considers it would be waste of money to instal the Minimax Fire Extinguisher at a cost of .£BO. The mover said he was of opinion that to instal these extinguishers would be standing in the way of a water and drainage scheme for the borough, for the reason that the people in and about the Main Street would not support a water scheme it they had some means of fighting fire. Some people wanted a water scheme purely for fire prevention purposes and if they got this they would oppose a water scheme. In any case he would rather let some other Council experiment with these extinguishers first. Cr Coley seconded the motion. He was of the same opinion as Cr Whibley that it would be standing in the way of a water and drainage scheme to instal the extinguisher. It would be throwing ,£80 away at the present time as everyone appeared to want water. Cr Barber said the extinguishers were alright in a private house, but it was doubtful if they would be effective for a large fire. Cr Freeman said if it was going to in any way interfere with the chances of getting a water scheme they should leave it alone. The motion was carried.
