The next ordinary meeting of the Moutoa Drainage Board will be held at the Board’s office, on Thursday, 17th inst., at 7.45 p.m. Business, general. At last uigbt’s Council meeting accounts amounting to 14s 1 id were passed for payment. During the month of June, 43 head of cattle were impounded by the ranger, the driving fees amounting to 225. The children’s ball, under the auspices of All Saints’ Ladies Guild will be held in the Coronation Hall on Thursday evening. We have to acknowledge the following donations in aid of the school library, which came to hand after the list was closed : Mr W. Ross £1 is, Mrs Langley ss, and H. Bradley 2s 6d.

At last night’s Council meeting Mr A. E. Admore’s tender of 2s 6d each for supplying and painting names on plates for the streets was accepted. The Inspector of Nuisances informs us that there is no truth In the statement made by the petitioners to the Hospital Board that cess pits are being drained into the Awahou Creek. There are no cess pits in the locality.

A letter was read at last night’s Council meeting from the manager of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Limited, notifying that in luture only two picture programmes could be supplied each week. These will arrive in time to be screened on Wednesdays and Saturdays, The Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes announced in the House that a tender had been accepted ot for the installation of automatic telephones at Auckland, Wellington, Blenheim, Oamaru, Hamilton, and Mastertou. The expenditure would be spread over four years.

The Otaki Bowling Club are holding their fourth Annual Ball on 14th August and the occasion marks the opening of the new theatre, Foxtou bowlers or friends are cordially invited. The local Club a. holding a euchre party and dance on Bth August in the Masonic Hall.

During this time she has shown herself diligent at the house door, frugal in work, mindful cf herself, faithful to her lovers, and honest when everything was out of the way.” It is reported that a resident of a King Country township arranged to transfer a sewing machine to a tradesman in satisfaction of debt. When the case supposed to contain the machine was opened it was found to contain nothing but boulders. The debtor had previously disappeared, leaving in the lurch other obliging tradesmen upon whom he had prevailed under the plea of distress. An old lady went to see the “ Quo Vadis ” film at the Grand last week, says an exchange, and was much impressed. Next day a beggar called at her house for something to eat, and the lady, thinking that he resembled a certain film actor whom she had seen the night before said : “ Here, my man, is a shilling. Now tell me, aren’t you Appius Claudius ?” “ No, mum, I’m miserable as ’ell, was the unexpected reply.

At the conclusion of a case against Reli (Betty) Tetua for murdering the man Graham with a crosscut saw, states an exchange, she, according to native custom, desired to shake hands with the Magistrate, but Mr Haseldeu excused himself on the ground that no good purpose could be served by the ceremony. Betty is a powerfully built woman of characteristic Maori type, having tatooed mouth and chin. She received her education at Wanganui and speaks English fluently.

There was only a meagre attendance at the municipal pictures last night but the programme screened was greatly appreciated. The star film, “On the Track of the Corkscrew Gang,” was a brilliant detective drama with many thrilling incidents, showing the villain escaping by means of the telephone wires, and eventually how he was run to earth made a very interesting picture. A very pretty sceulc picture was found in "Scenes in Mozambique,” which took the audience’s attention throughout. The industrial film, “Manufacture of Combs,” was a very interesting one and gave the audience some idea of how these articles are made. The comic films were of the usual high order and gave one an opportunity of having a real hearty laugh. On the whole, the programme was one of a highly interesting and educational nature. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Foxlon Borough Council was held last night when there were present: His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles, Esq.), and Crs Coley, Whibley, Chrystall, Speirs, Henderson, Barber, Freeman and Read. Cr Green sent an apology stating that it bad been decided to hold the meeting on the Tuesday instead of the usual Mondoy night, and he had then made other arrangements for the Monday night. The meeting had then been altered to the usual night and on account of his other engagement he was unable to be present. The Mayor said that the matter of altering the meetingnight until the Tuesday had been casually discussed and notices to the effect had been sent out, but as no resolution had been passed, the meeting night could not be altered and a further notice was sent to Councillors advising that the Monday night would be adhered to.

Experiments have been made with animals to show just how freezing to death proceeds. In one of these experiments, in which the animal was placed in a temperature of from 115 to 150 deg. below zero, the breathing and heart-beats were at first quickened, the organic heat of the body actually rising above the normal, which is q 8.6 deg. F. This showed a sudden and intense effort on the part of temperature. Then violent heart action gave out suddenly, and death came when the temperature of the heart dropped to 71 deg. F. At last night’s Council meeting, an application for the hall for four consecutive nights iu November was received from the Secretary of the Catholic Church Bazaar Committee, and Messrs Heuuessy and Spelman waited on the Council iu support of the application. After some discussion it was decided to leave the matter over until a future meeting and in the meantime to ascertain if it would be possible to get the ordinary Wednesday picture programme iu time to screen on the Monday night, and if so the hall will be booked for the Bazaar Committee on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th of November.
