HOSPITAL DISTRICT.

HOROWHENUA COUNTY AND DEVIN BOROUGH.

ASK TO BE INCLUDED IN PALMERSTON DISTRICT.

Some months ago application was made to have portions of the Horowhenua County and Levin Borough at present in the Wellington Hospital District, merged into the Palmerston North Hospital and Charitable Aid District. The Palmerston Board was unanimously in favour of the proposal, but a letter was received from the Inspector-General, stating that the Minister in charge of Hospitals had advised him that the Wellington Hospital Board had adopted a resolution objecting to the severance of part of the Horowhenua County from the Wellington Hospital District, but that no objection would be made to merge the whole county in the Palmerston Hospital District. This meant passing over the administration of the Otaki Hospital and Sanatorium to the Palmerston Board. Mr Gardener has held meetings throughout the Horowhenua County and at which resolutions were passed favouring the transfer proposals. Messrs Gardener and Stephenson waited upon the Palmerston District Board on Thursday and asked that the Board take in the whole county. It was pointed out how unfairly the county and Levin borough were taxed through being attached to the Wellington Board, while the majority of the patients in that district preferred the Palmerston hospital as being more central and convenient. The stumbling block to the Palmerston Board was the Otaki hospital and sanitorium. The Board asked that the delegates put their proposals in writing, copies of which to be supplied and considered by members and the whole matter be considered at next meeting. It was also decided that the Board executive visit the Otaki Hospital and Sanitorium and formulate a report.
