FATAL FIRE IN AUCKLAND.
MAN BURNED TO DEATH.
Auckland, July xx
Ernest Edward Cooke, aged 34, a baker, residing at Northcote, was burned to death last night in a fire which destroyed his residence and furniture. It is supposed the fire was caused by the upsetting of a lamp which Cooke was using to prepare gruel. At 11.30 p.m, his wife discovered the kitchen in flames and Cooke in a state of collapse, with his clothing ablaze. Neighbours named Fitzpatrick made a gallant attempt to rescue Cooke, but were beaten back by smoke and flames. Cooke’s incinerated remains were found this morning in the debris. The house was insured for in the Alliance. The furniture was uninsured.
