FOOTBALL.

MANAWATU (19) v. HORO

WHENUA (13).

This game was played at Eevin on Saturday last, and was a most exciting contest from start to finish. The weather was good, and there was a large attendance of the public. Play, as far as Horowhenua was concerned, was not spectacular, work being mostly confined to the forwards. Manawatu, however, were more showy, and the public were rewarded for their attendance by witnessing some nice passing amongst the visiting backs. Horowhenua’s forwards played a splendid game, but the same could not be said of their backs, who were weak in attack and worse in defence. Horowhenua won the toss and had the wind in their favour in the first spell, in which they put on eight points, two tries being scored by Tohe Winiata, one of which Nepia Winiata converted. In the second spell with the wind behind them Manawatu forced matters and scored five tries, two of which were converted. Towards the end of the spell the home team got going and after a good piece of forward play Malcolm got over. Nepia Winiata kicked a good goal. A few minutes after the whistle blew leaving Manawatu victorious by the above mentioned margin.

A North versus South junior match was played as a curtain raiser to the representative match, and resulted in a win for the North by 5 points 103. For the North Veal scored and V. Pope converted, while Rangi scored the South’s try.

The Maori team which has just returned from Australia will play Horowhenua at Levin on Wednesday. Tte following team has been chosen to represent Horowhenua : Woods T. Winiata N. Winiata Frankland Rawiri Lewer McDonald Close Burrows Kehu W. Winiata Reihana Malcolm Beid Petman

Emer., sacks, D. Wilson; forward, Bartholomew.
