MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting was held on Tuesday. Present: Crs, J. G. Wilson (in the chair), W. J. Phillips, H. Hunt, W. E. Barber and R. B. McKenzie. Leave ot absence was granted to Crs. Henson and Gray.
Correspondence was received from :
Railway Department, accepting offer of ,£l5O for two cars for tramway, which will be set up at Wellington free of charge. — Received.
Palmerston Hospital Board, that the contributing local bodies would need to take steps as they consider necessary to provide the levies due and to be assessed. Loan of £IO7O to be rained. Easton Co., Foxton, applying for transfer of slaughtering license to R. Bryant.—Granted. The following transfers were approved: Hemp Process Co., to Alex. Spiers and A. J. Gibbs, 5 acres 3 roods ; C. F. Johnson to H. C. Easton and K. I. Easton, 139 acres.
The County Treasurer, Mr A. K. Drew, reported as follows: General account, dr. 2s 3d; loan account, cr. ,£9B 8s yd. Riding credits : Saudon is. Mt. Stewart 14s 3d, Waitohi ,£286 13s id, Rongotea ,£365 5s rod, Carnarvon ,£329 15s 3d, Kawakawa os nd, Whirokino i6s 1 id, Awahou, dr. £37 15s id. The Overseer reported on the Awahou Riding as follows ; As requested by Cr Barber, I met the flaxmillers at the Waitanui mill to discuss the question of heavy traffic on the Foxton-Shannon road. I went over the road with Messis Mabin and Ross and explained the position to them. They said they were quite agreeable to assist the Council to maintain the road up to a given point providing they were allowed to cart on the road with Sin tyres.
Whirokino Riding. A few trucks of metal have been sent to Foxton to repair the weak places on Whirokino road.
The tramway manager, Mr A. K. Drew, reported that the traffic for June was good, the chief items being : merchandise tons, minerals 61tons, flax 68 trucks, metal 490 yards, timber 40,200 feet. Fares amounted to os ud. The expenses were heavy and the month finished up with a credit balance of £53 6s 9d. Included in expenditure are the following extra items: Extra wages ;£rß 12s, coal repairs to locomotives £23 4s od ; total freight for the two “D ’ class cars from Pioton to Foxton from Messrs Levin and Co. Price In the early part of the month the boiler tubes of “ Manawatu ” were leaking badly and on examination a crack was found in the fire box tube plate. As the engine was wanted, the matter was reported at once to the Inspector of Machinery and his consent obtained to have repairs effected. This is at present being done. In the meantime the men in the metal pit have been discharged. The present roadmen were reappointed except for the Awahou riding to which position an appointment was made conditionally on the Overseer being satisfied as to the successful applicant. The present roadman for Awahou riding, Mr Giffkins, did not apply tor re-appointment.
