THE FIT OF A DRESS.
AMUSING COURT CASE
The case iu which the fit ot a costume was involved was concluded at the Auckland Magistrate’s Court, before Mr C. C. Kettle, S.M., on Saturday morning. Mrs E. L. Cooper, a dressmaker, claimed 29s from a client, Miss S. H. Dunn. The hearing A r as adjourned a fortnight ago, to enable each side to procure an expert to see the dress tried on, but these experts brought the problem at issue no nearer to solution, Mr J. A. Spencer, a tailor, called to give evidence for the plaintiff, considered that the dress was a perfect fit, but for the defence, Mr W. A. Bunker, another tailor, considered that the dress was no fit at all. It was “ all bagged up iu one place, and the skirt was too tight,” he remarked. His Worship said that the case was an extraordinary one. Two expert tailors had given directly opposite opinions regarding the dress. “I cannot decide,” said Mr Kettle. ‘‘l think it is high time that 1 had two ladies as assessors to sit with me in such cases. I can decide anything about men’s clothing, but with the ever-changing fashions iu ladies’ clothing, it is impossible. Some independent expert should be called in to see the dress.” It was eventually decided that the head dressmaker of one of the leading Auckland firms should be called in. The case was thereupon adjourned for an hour to get the opinion of the head dressmaker of Messrs Milne and Choyce, who ultimately declared that the dress was a good fit, but was somewhat the worse for the various tryings on. Mr Kettle thereupon gave judgment for the amount claimed, with costs.
