SHIP “MANNED BY WOMEN.”
CAPTAIN’S HUSBAND THE ONLY MAN ON BOARD.
There sailed out of Boston on May x2th the schooner Hiram, which is commanded and chiefly worked by women. The vessel, which is xoo years old, is commanded by Mrs Georgia Orne, and the only man on board is her husband, who has signed as first mate under bis wile, the rest of the crew being women. Mrs Orne is not a suffragette, but she has owned and commanded the Hiram for some years. She is a good navigator, and a daring and excellent sailor. Having had trouble with her crew of men last season, she determined to replace them with women, and the ancient schooner, manned by women, sailed for the coast of Maine to pick up a cargo of timber for New York. She was to bring back from that port a cargo of coal. Mrs Orne was at the wheel, and the doughty woman skipper gave her orders as sharply and accurately as any man could, while her female crew smartly executed them. There was a big crowd at the pier to see the Hiram off, and rousing cheers followed the vessel as she made her way out of harbour. Every steamer gave the schooner a salute, and old skippers declared that the Hiram was as well handled as any crew of men could have done it.
