FOOTBALL.

HOROWHENUA (13) v. RANGITIKEI (n).

The first representative football match of the season, as far as the Horowhenua Union is concerned, ■Was played on the local racecourse on Saturday, when the Horowhenua team defeated Raugitikei by 13 points to 11. This was the .first “rep” fixture played locally since Foxton has been portion of the Horowhenua Union, and consequently more than usual interest was taken in the match, the gate receipts totalling 14 s - The game, as the scores indicate, was ••a very even one, but the exhibi- • tion of rugby* for a representative fixture anyhow, was decidedly poor. Of course, this would be due to a certain extent to the fact that neither teams, had played • together before, and the players . consequently had bad no opportunity- of getting accustomed to ; each other’s play. All arrangements in connection with the match were admirably carried out

and reflect great credit on those responsible. The Foxton Brass Wand under Bandmaster Ebbett was in attendance and played Selections prior to the commence- . Anent of the game and also at half time* After the, match the teams wereehfertained at dinner by Mr Freeman,at Whyte’s Hotel. The ‘teams lined out as under : Horowhenua. (Blue and White). Geddis T. Winiata J. Martin Wilson N. Winiata Woods McDonald Lewer Burrows O’Regan W. Winiata Hilson Freyberg Reid ' Malcolm Rangitikei. (Red and White). • Ingram Broughton Signal Blair Potter Bishop Richards Green Riggs Heglan Dean Heglan Stratford Reid Knox Horowhenua kicked off against a very slight breeze, the ball being returned into touch by Reid. From the line out Raugitikei commenced to press, play being for some little time in-Horowhenua’s 25. From a scrum the reds got possession, but Blair in attempting to centre the ball kicked too hard and Nepia forced.. The blues immediately after the drop out transferred play to the reds territory, but a free kick relieved-matters and the scene of operations was gradually worked into. Hqrowhenua’s 25, where off side play gave them a free kick and Green made a good, though unsuccessful shot at goal, and Horowhenua again forced. Some give and take play followed the ball going from one end of the field to. the other, eventually returning to Horowhenua’s 25, where a free kick was awarded Rangitikei. Green made a splendid kick the ball going between the posts. Rangitikei 3 —Horowhenua p. This reverse stimulated Horowhenua temporarily and they rushed play into their opponents ; 25, where Nepia Winiata made a i good; though unsuccessful attempt at goal. Horowhenua continued to press and Rangitikei had to I force. Play still continued, in the reds’ 25, until Signal relieved matters by a particularly fine line ■ kick which went well into Horowhenua’s 25. From the line ont Green eventually got possession l and forced his way over the line. The kick at goal failed. Rangitikei 6—Horowhenua o. From this on to the end of the spell play was of an even nature and the first half ended without any further addition to the scores. From the commeilcement of the second spell Rangitikei pressed but only temporarily, the blues work- , ing play into their opponents’ territory. From a loose scramble Nepia cleverly got possession and passed out to Wilson who dashed over the line. Nepia converted. Rangitikei 6—Horowhenua 5, The success stimulated the blues and they continued to force matters and from some loose play Woods scored. Nepia again added the major points. Horowhenua 10 — Rangitikei 6. The local team were now playing with more combination, although the exhibition was not up to representative form. Another try was registered for Horowhenua by Martin, Nepia failing with the kick and Broughton scored for Rangitikei, Green converting, the game ending Horowhenua i3r-Rangitikei 11. Mr ,0. H. Cleland controlled the game . ju a manner which gave satisfactionTo all.

On Saturday next Foxton seniors will play Tainui at Levin, • and Foxton and Weraroa juniors will meet at Shannon. The Wanganui-Manawatu rep match, played at Wanganui on Saturday, resulted in a win for the home team by n points to nil. The junior match to have been played on Saturdafy- between Foxton and Hui Mai did not take place on account of the Manakau team failing to put in an appearance and Foxton thus won by forfeit,,, '
