EARLY SETTLERS' JOURNAL.
Wk have pleasure in acknowledging receipt of a very interesting booklet, named “The Journal of the Early Settlers and Historical Association of Wellington.” It is the second quarterly issue and should be of absorbing interest to the children of the “ pilgrim fathers” of this province. It contains short biographical sketches of many ot the Wellington pioneers and some excellent illustrations. In one of the group photographs of early settlers we notice Mr Alf. Hirst, of Foxton. A very interesting sketch appears under tie heading, “New Zealand Land Company's First Purchase.” In this the details are set forth of the number of red blankets, muskets, tierces of tobacco, iron pots, cases of soap, tomahawks, red nightcaps, beads, jews’ harps, sticks of sealing >vax, razors, combs, pocket handkerchiefs, etc., etc., that were handed over by Wakefield to the Maori chiefs in payment for certain lands in the vicinity of Wellington. There is a list of the first ten ships that arrived in. Port IJicholson and the dates of arrival.' “Exploration of. the Manawatii and Wairarapa Districts in 1842,” written by Mr Charles H. Kettle, is a particularly interesting contribution. We congratulate the executive, upon its labours which wa worthy of the highest commendations. All old settlers should subscribe to the journal and to such end should communicate with Mr Ronald K. Evens, Wellington.
