SOCIALIST ORATOR AND HIS “FACTS.”

Recently a Socialist speaker, at the bottom of Queen Strreet, Auckland, made the statement that whilst he was in London last year be saw a, demonstration of over 10,000 unemployed men on Tower Hill. During the course of that gathering, he said, a salute was fired from the Tower in honour of the King’s Birthday. This, the speaker stated, cost £2O per round. One who was listening called the speaker to task for these two statemerits, but the speaker waived the matter. The gentleman challenging declared that as he was brought up in the vicinity of the Tower Hill, he was certain that it would not accommodate many more than 5000 men at any one meeting. With regard to the cost of £2O per round for the salute fired, this gentleman pointed out that the ammunition used was obsolete, and only fit for saluting purposes, and, so far from costing £2O, the intrinsic value would not be more than aod. The speaker questioned the authority of the gentleman for this statement, and the reply was, “I used to be attached to a naval gunnery school, and was a lecturer on ammunition.”
