A DESPERATE CHARACTER.
Hastings, June 4
John Ellis Smith, a middle-aged man, was committed for trial today on a charge of attempting to discharge a weapon loaded with destructive material at Francis Henry Bloxsome. The evidence for the prosecution alleged that Smith went to Bloxspme’s house on May 24th and asked for which, he maintained, was owing to him. Bloxsome refusing to comply with the demand, the accused drew a revolver, which he pointed at the prosecutor saying, “If this won’t do this (producing a sheath-knife) will.”
Bloxsome closed with Smith, whom he held till the arrival of the police. The revolver was found to be loaded in fou r chambers.
The accused reserved his defence. . Bail was refused.
