SHANNON-EKETAHUNA STOCK ROUTE.

Thk settlers at Hukanui, between Pahiatua and Eketahuna, held

social on Thursday evening to bring the matter of the Shannon stock route further under the notice of the residents. There was a large attendance. During the evening speeches in favour of the projected route were delivered by Messrs G. F. Ranby (chairman of the committee) Knight, Joseph Dawson (chairman of the Eketahuna County Council), Bedding (secretary of the Farmers’ Union and Chamber of Commerce, Eketahuna), G. Turner and Carrutheis. Mr Ranby, who has already been over the proposed" track, dealt with the many advantages that would be obtained once the road became an accomplished fact. He, with the other speakers, had no doubt that when once the provincial importance of the proposed road was fully recognised, the wishes of the district would be favourably considered by the Government. This route was first advocated by Mr Nation (now of Devin) many years ago, and was enthusiastically taken up by a number of settlers on both sides of the ranges. We hope that the matter will be urged upon the Government again this session.
