PITMAN GENTENARY.
CELEBRATIONS IN LONDON,
LONDON, May 7. The centenary of the birth of Isaac Pitman, the famous stenographer and inventor of the Pitman system of shorthand, will he commemorated on the 23rd inst. Tho most prominent feature of the celebration will be an exhibition at which will he shown some remarkably interesting books, portraits, and prints, all illustrative, of the history and development of phonography. At one of the gatherings to be held addresses will'be delivered by prominent journalists.
Sir Isaac Pitman, who was born at Trowbridge, England, on January 4th, 1813. became master of tho British School at Bar-ton-on-Humber, in 1831, established tho British Schol at Wotton-undcr-Edge in 1836, and removed to Bath in 1839. He published in 1837 his first treatise on shorthand, entitled “Stenographic Shorthand.” in which ho applied phonography to shorthand. After the establishment of the Phonetic Society in 1343, ho devoted himself wholly to the propagation of his system of shorthand, and was the head of tho Phonetic Institute at Bath. Tie was also identified with the movement for spelling reform. He was knighted in 1894, and died three years later.
