The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, May 22nd., 1913. SCANDALOUS BEHAVIOUR ON THE FOXTON TRAIN.
It is about time the railway authorities took action to prevent the scandalous and riotous behaviour of a number of men who on certain evenings board the Foxton bound train at Palmerston, under the influence of liquor, and with a plentiful supply of liquid refreshments in bottles. The conduct and language of these men Is absolutely disgraceful. Their vile utterances penetrate other carriages in which women and children are seated. We do not think such conduct would be tolerated for one moment on any other line in the Dominion. On Tuesday night a brutal scene was witnessed on the train between a European and Maori, and a number of ladies travelling second-class were compelled to seek shelter in a firstclass carriage. We have seen men staggering on to this train at Palmerston, time and again, in a state of intoxication and have listened to some of the vilest language imaginable. To raise objection on the spot would bring about serious consequences. It is impossible for the guard to keep an eye on the conduct of these roysterers because his time is fully taken up with shunting operations at the many small stations en route. We appeal to the district traffic manager to investigate these facts, and to take such steps to protect the travelling public against such scandalous conduct in the future.
