ENTERTAINMENTS.
CATHOLIC SOCIAL AND DANCE. The second of the series of social functions under the auspices of the Catholic Church, will be held in the Town Hall to-morrow night. A capital programme has been arranged and refreshments will be provided.
CORONATION PICTURES. The Municipal Picture enterprises continue to put on fine star programmes and again on Saturday night wil be presented a really good show. “The Power of Silence” is a remarkable picture of Western atmosphere in two reels. Thos. Lowry, a wealthy ranch owner makes his will in favour of his adopted daughter Jane. ‘‘The Silent One” a sheep herder of powerful personality loves Jane and Lowry approves of the match. Robert Sinclair, nephew of the old man, comes from the East, and falls in love with Jane, and the “ Silent One ” looks on without words. The Easterner with his polished manners fascinates the girl, and he tells her of the wonders of bis country. All through, the power of the “Silent One” throbs and throbs in the story, and when the girl is reduced to_poverty and dies broken-hearted, the “ Silent One” claims justice even to the cost of his own life. “In the Days of Ancient Rome,” is a beautiful star drama, long, and magnificently mounted, and really carries us back to the days of Rome’s greatness; wealth, and cruelty. “ Into the Genuine ”is a drama founded on the inconsistency of our so-called modern society in which over 500 members of the National Motion Picture Exhibitors take part. There is an exciting wheat pit scene where over 500 people lake active parts, fortunes are made and fortunes swept away. There is also showing a thrilling drama “ The Sheiiff’s Last Shot.” A topical budget of a recent date, an interesting film “ Animal Studies,” “ Bergen,” scenic, and some grand comics.
THE ROYAL PICTURES. Saturday night’s picture programme at the Royal will include a thrilling story of military intrigue entitled. “For their Country,” featuring the favourite Continental actress Saharet in the leading role. An officer in a Continental army determines to procure copies of fortification plans of a neighbouring Power. With the aid of his sweetheart he succeeds, but only alter the most stirring series of events. The play is most lavishly mounted, the ball-room scene being especially effective. The environment of the story is amidst scenes of gorgeous splendour, and the plot is portrayed by a most capable company of Continental artists. Other attractive films are “ Funnicus’s Serenade,” a screamingly funny record of a love smitten youth. “ The awakening of Bianca,” is a beautiful film depicting all the refined intensity of Italian love. “An affair at Raynors’.” is full of incidents. Mary secures a position as stenographer at Raynor and Jones. Raynor’s welcomes her, while Wilson, his trusted clerk, took a dislike to her. Wilson who has lost all his money at the stock game, attempts to take money from the safe, and Mary who has been watching him confronts him with a revolver. She rings up Raynor’s ctub, and a struggle ensues between Mary and Wilson and in the middle of the struggle Raynor, his brother and an officer rush in. Wilson is arrested. The next morning Mr Raynor’s brother whose admiration for Mary is unbounded, succeds in getting Mr Raynor’s consent to her going to Europe on a private diplomatic mission lor him.
