A LUCKY FIND.
A young man, in the person of Mr L. G. Naylor, has every reason to be thankful for the inclination which seized him the other day to go out shooting rabbits as it led to his finding a remarkably rich patch of gold while walking across the Commonage at Clyde (says the Dunedin Times). Young Naylor observed something shining on the surface of the ground, and, on picking it up, was surprised to find that it was a nugget of gold of some two or three ounces. Making further examination of the ground at the spot he was astonished and . delighted to find several other small nuggets'. On prosecuting his search still further per medium of a pocket knife, still more of the precious metal was brought to light. The fortunate finder lost little time m bagging and conveying the dirt in the vicinity into Clyde, and the subsequent washup yielded some 38 ounces ot gold. Unfortunately, beyond a radius of some six feet square, not a particle of gold was found, and it is evident that the find was a plant. Waikeri Valley was the scene of considerable .mining in the early days of Otago, and some excellent yields of gold were obtained there.
