A SENSATIONAL HUNAWAY.
Auckland. May 16,
A sensational runaway occurred this morning at Hden Terrace when two horses in a four-wheeled wagon bolted. The driver, riming behind and hanging on to the reins could not control the animals. A man named Smith, an employee of the Eden Terrace Road Board, attempted to seize the animals by the head, but his arm got jammed between the trace and one of the horses and he was dragged a distance of 50 yards. He was able to keep his feet, but was kicked by one of the horses, and when he became disentangled he fell under the cart and the front wheels passed over him. He was dragged some distance in front of the back wheels which were locked. The unfortunate man, who is married, with two children, was found to have sustained four broken ribs, besides sustaining terrible internal injuries, and his condition is regarded as critical. The horses were at length stopped by the driver without further harm being done.
