NEWLY-FOUND TRIBE.

JOHN HAVII.AND, 70, AND HIS FAMILY OF 72.

John Haviland, a septuagenarian mountaineer, recently arrived at Huntington, West Virginia, U.S.A., in search of employment. Incidentally, Haviland brought with him from his mountain home a small army of 15 children and 20 grandchildren, for whom he casually mentioned that he desired to find employment. The employment agency, which Haviland and his “ army ’’visited were naturally staggered, but the old mountaineer cheerfully mentioned that be had another 37 children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren at home. He in-

formed the manager that they had too many boys and girls at home to run their mountain farm, and as they needed money to buy agricultural implements, seeds, and clothing he thought it best to bring part of the family down to the city and put them to work, instead of having them waste their time idling in the Alisghenies.

Ten of the children were married and had families, but the hardy old mountaineer said: “ When I get all these lads and lasses something to do, I will send for another batch.” Asked why he wanted employment himself, Haviland, said that he could not trust all these “ lads and lasses” alone in a city, and that he preferred to work there with them in order to keep a fatherly eye on them.
