STABLE KEEPER AND SHARPERS.

The Woodville paper publishes the following : The following good “have” has just come to light. On the morning of the Pahiatua races two gentlemen of the sporting fraternity arrived in Woodville by the second morning train from Palmerston. They were greatly disappointed when they discovered that the first train to Pahiatua left at one o’clock. This would not suit their book. They came up town determined on driving to the Pahiatua racecourse. The owner of the first livery-stable they called at did not like their appearance, and as they would not part with the price of a hire in advance, he refused to accommodate them. Then they tried another livery-stable, got a spanking horse and buggy, and left ior Pahiatua in fine style. The liverystable keeper waited for the return of bis horse and trap until after one o’clock in the morning, resolved on charging bis customers double fare for his extra vigil. As there were j?o sjps of the spellers next morning, the liverystable keeper had a look round the town, and found his horse and conveyance in another livery • stable. It appears the sporting gentlemen arrived there early the previous evening, and gaye instructions for the horse to get two feeds, and they would pall iu the morning and pay ! They lelt by the evening train for Palmerston, and that was the last seen of them. It cost the livery-stable keeper 5s to release firs fiprse and trap, but he vows vengeance, find swears he will drop across those spellers presently.
