DISCONTENTED POLICEMEN.
MINISTER’S STRAIGHT TALK.
Wellington, May 7.
Hon. A. L. Herdman, Minister for Justice, interviewed on the subject of the reported discontent in the police force, declared: “If the state of affairs at Auckland as reported in the local papers is true, then the position is serious, and will necessitate firm handling immediately- I cannot understand the present alleged unrest, and don’t believe it is widespread. From what appeared in the press, Igrather that Mr Rosser, wellknown in Auckland labour circles, has been getting in touch with the junior men with a view to forming an association. I may say at once that this sort of thing will not be tolerated. In the event of labour troubles happening, the police must be under the direct control of the Commissioner and the Government, so I shall not permit any Labour leader to interfere with the discipline of the force- Every facility will be, and has been, given to members of the force to state their grievances, but rebellion won’t be put up with.”
