CITIZENS FAREWELL TO MR STEWART.
Old aud young residents will regret to learn that Mr W. S. Stewart, has definitely decided to leave Foxton aud take up his residence with his nephew, Mr G Archibald at Te Awamutu. When this fact became known, members of All Saints’ Church decided to organise a fitting farewell to one who has given devoted service for over a quarter of a century to the church. On the suggestion of others the vicar fell in with the idea to make the function a citizens affair, and a meeting was held of representative citizens yesterday, presided over by the Mayor at which arrangements were made to hold a public farewell meeting in the Masonic Hall on the evening of Thursday, 15th inst, at 8 o’clock. It was decided to present Mr Stewart with a purse or sovereigns as a token of esteem in which he is held by all classes of the community, and it was decided to leave lists tor this purpose at the Herald Office, Town Clerk’s Office, Messrs Walker and Furrie’s, and Mr C. H, Collins’, and with Mr A. D. Cleraett at the Post Office. Mr A. D. Clemett was appointed treasurer of the fund. It was decided that the Mayor should make the presentation and preside at the meeting, and a number of representative gentlemen were appointed to say a few words on the occasion. The Salvation Army, who had booked the hall for the night, generously gave way to the holding of the function. It was decided to eliminate from the proceedings anything in the nature of vocal or instrumental items. We, hope that the voluntary donations will be liberal and cosmopolitan.
