INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.
, The newly-elected Mayor, Mr G. H. Stiles, was installed into his office at last night’s special meeting of the Borough Council by the late Mayor, Mr A. J. Gibbs. Mr Gibbs said that the installation of Mr Stiles as Mayor was one of the most pleasant duties he had had to perform during bis connection with the Council. It W as pleasing to him because he knew that Mr Stiles would do bis best for the borough as a whole and he felt sure that the Mayor and Councillors would have a pleasant term of office. He referred to two recommendations handed down from the old Council. One was the further considstation of Mr Suggate's water scheme and the other the granting of a free pass to picture entertainments to Mr and Mrs Fraser. He was sorry that the Council was losing Mr Fraser’s services, and said that although they might get as good a man he was certain they would not get a better one. The success of the Coronation Hall was in a very large measure due to his splendid work and enthusiasm. Mr Gibbs concluded by wishing the Mayor and Councillors a pleasant term of office. Mr Stiles made the statutory
declaration and took his seat. He ' thanked Mr Gibbs for his kind remarks and said that it was a source of great pleasure to him to again take his seat as Mayor of the town. It was all the more pleas- , ing to him on this occasion as there had been a contest and be was therefore in a position to take ' up his duties know ing that he possessed the confidence of the electors. On the four previous occasions on which he had been returned as Mayor there had been ho opposition, and until after the recent election he was hot altogether sure whether his return unopposed was on account of the indifference of the electors or because they had confidence in him as their Mayor. By the handsome majority he had received at the recent poll he was satisfied that bis election without opposition on the previous occasions was because the people had every confidence in him. He congratulated the old Councillors on their re-elec-tion, which he said, proved that the ratepayers were satisfied with their actions in the past and had every cohfidence in them. He also , ’ extended a hearty welcome to the new Councillors. He said that ' ’ during his term of office he would do all he could to make the , Councillors’ duties as light and as pleasant as possible and would be pleased to give them any assistance in his power. He felt sure they were all there with the one object in. view-i-the welfare of Foxton and he hoped they would work with unanimity in furtherance of that object. He expressed the hope that they would assist him in upholding the dignity of the chair and help him to carry out the duties as they should be carried out. Referring to Mr Fraser’s resignation, he expressed regret that the Council was losing his services and said he was sorry that Gr Speirs’ motion to grant him Hires months leave of absence on full pay was not carried. It seemed to him that to have passed that motion would have been a nice act of courtesy to the Town Clerk after 14 years service. Then again, when the new clerk took over his duties his task would be a difficult one and he knew that Mr Fraser, would give him all' the assistance he could, and if the Council had granted the three months leave of absence they would feel that they , were not imposing on him. Mr Stiles referred to the conduct of the meetings and asked Councillors to make themselves conversant with the Standing Orders. He concluded by agaiu thanking Mr Gibbs lor the remarks made and said he was sure that the year just entered on would be one of great pleasure to himself and the Councillors and »profitable to the borough as a whole.
