Says the London Express:—“A New Zealand farmer at Waituna, driving in a motor car with two powerful headlights, bags nightly between six and a dozen hares, who are so fascinated by the glare of the lamps that they become stationary targets.” It is stated that of the 60,000 persons who die annually from tuberculosis in England, 11,000 are children, under 5 years of age. This works out roughly at about 244 infants per million of the population. In New Zealahd the fraction is about 60 per million. On account of bad weather, shipping in Wellington has been at a standstill for the past day or so, and none of the steamers have been able to leave the port. A. good story is being told of a citizen who made an unofficial call to the battle-cruiser. He is said to have rowed himself out to the “New Zealand,” and made fast his tiny craft, afterwards stepping aboard. An officer on duty inquired as to the visitor’s business, and politely advised him to leave the deck. “Is Captain Halsey about ?” he asked. ,f WelI, yes, but he cannot be seen,” N came the answer, although the lieutenant agreed to take a message. “Just tell him,” said the bewhiskered old fellow,'“that one of the owners was out to see how things were getting on. The Herald staff desires to thank Cr. Read for providing refreshments on Friday morning. His thoughtfulness was much appreciated. Those who condemned Sir Joseph Ward during the last election campaign condemned him chiefly out of their ignorance of political history, for his record of works in the cause of the people who require the assistance of Governments should have compelled gratitude. We feel certain that the Ministerial newspapers will have no reason next session to ask who is Leader of the Opposition, or to level cheap sneers at those who have leaped into the breach of any emergency which demanded prompt action. —Southland News.
