According to Uondon newspapers, before the Union Steamship Company’s steamer Niagara left Plymouth for Sydney, on her maiden voyage, an exciting scene occurred on board. Many of the liner’s passengers joined the vessel at Glasgow. Among them were a couple who were travelling as man and wife, with two children (girls) for Sydney. By a special train, run to Plymouth Irom Paddington, there travelled a resident of North Uondou, about 35 years of age, who was accompanied by his mother. He proceeded on board the Niagara, and there recognised his wife and children among the second-class passengers. They were travelling under an assumed name. An angry scene ensued, in the course of which the lady’s man companion was struck on the face by the husband’s mother.

An appeal was made to the woman to return to her home, but she declined although the children were taken from her possession. In the end the little girls, who cried for their mother, were landed at Plymouth, while the couple continued their voyage. The children, with their father and grandmother, returned to I^qndon.
