SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION.

The annual meeting of householders to elect a school committee was held in the school house last night. There was a very sparse attendance. Mr Hornblow was voted to the chair. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The balancesheet disclosed that the receipts for the year, including a credit balance of .£32 17s rod carried forward from last year, totalled of which were, capitation 4s, half sanitation rate £4 ss, proceeds from concert 9s, and refund from hire of hall £2, The expenditure totalled £ll2 is sd, the principal items were—school cleaning >£34 17s, school ground improvement £4l 10s 6d, repairs etc. ,£ll ns gd, sanitation ,£4 ss, fuel £-] 7s, school drum £4. Bs. The picnic and prize fund disclosed a credit of ,£1 ns. The report stated that twelve ordinary and two special meetings had been held, and the attendance had been very satisfactory. Although the grounds, there was still much to do betore the Committee’s objective was reached i.e. to make the school’s environment as beautiful as any under the jurisdiction, for such environment had a marked effect upon the school and home life of the children. Reference was made to the keen interest taken in the gardens by the head teacher and scholars, and to the honours won in this connection. The health of the children had been good, and in this respect credit was due to the caretaker for the painstaking manner in which he had carried out his duties. The children had been taken to the Ashhurst Domain for their annual picnic and were liberally catered for, both as to prizes and refreshments. The excursion to the battleship was also mentioned. The relations between the committee, parents, teaching staff and Board were of the most harmonious nature. The committee’s thanks were due to Mr Coley for his efforts in raising funds for the picnic, to the teaching staff for assisting with the annual concert, to the Boiough Council for a donation, and to the general public for its practical sympathy. The report and were adopted.

Twelve nominations were received for nine seats on the Committee, and the following gentlemen were elected ;—Messrs Hornblow, Coley, Alex. Speirs, Henderson, Betty, Hunt, Hussey, Rev. J. M. Thomson and S. Read.

Votes of thanks were passed to the teaching staff for the efficient manner in which they had discharged their duties, to the Chairman and Mr Coley and the Secretary. Suitable replies were made. A meeting of the new committee was subsequently held, and Mr Hornblow was re-elected chairman and Mr R. T. Betty secretary. It was resolved to meet on ths third Thursday in every month. Messrs Betty and Coley were appointed visitors for the month. The Chairman was appointed delegate to the School Committee Association’s Conlerence and if unable to attend to appoint a substitute.

MOUTOA SCHOOL. There was a good attendance at the householders’ meeting at Moutoa. Mr A. Saunders presided. Twelve candidates were nominated and the following committee elected; —-Messrs W. S. Carter, E. Pigott, F. Wilkins, W. Dudson, F. Shaw, F. Williams and A. Saunders.

SHANNON SCHOOL. Mr Law presided. Mr Richardson, chairman of the outgoing Committee, read the annua report. A credit balance of *l° 6s iid was carried forward. It was decided to instruct the incoming Committee to * sewing machine. C°mm elected : Messrs C chairman) c. F. Exall, W. Law, Aim, F. ijnsell, A. Merewood and H. Logan.
