TOWN CLERK’S ASSISTANT.
INCREASE IN SALARY GRANTED. At last night’s Council meeting an application was received from the Town Clerk’s assistant ("Miss Fraser) for an increase in salary from £t to £1 xos per week. Cr Speirs moved, and Cr Adams seconded, that the application of Miss Fraser be granted. , Speaking in support of the motion, Cr Adams said that it would always be necessary to have an assistant in the office, as the present assistant had been there for six years. The experience gained would be of great assistance to the new Town Clerk, and the Council should therefore do all in its power to retain her services.
•Cr Whibley said that- all along he had considered that the assistant was under-paid,' and he held that a female should be entitled to the same remuneration as a .male it she was doing the same work. It would be impossible to get a male clerk to do the work for the
money. lu the past the assistant ' had Jbeen. underpaid—in fact, sweated—the lowest paid job be had heard of. Her knowledge would be of great assistance to the new Town Clerk, and he would be pleased to support the {increase in wages, in fact, he would like to
see it increased to j£2 per week. The Mayorsaid he would* support the motion,' as for the work she was doing she was very much under-paid indeed. Ip addition
to other work, she did practically the w v hole of the clerical duties in connection with the gas works, for which,, in the time of the h'oston Gas* Company the secretary was - paid at the rate of
per annum. > .‘ The ntotion on, being put was gafried.
