POLICE COURT.

OBSCENE LANGUAGE.

At the local Police Court this morning, before Messrs Rimmer and Heuuessy, J.’sP.. Arthur McKegney was charged on the information of the police, with (i) using obscene language in a public place, to wit, the public bar of the Family Hotel and (2)'' with drunkenness. . Evidence for the prosecution as ~ to the of the language complained of was given by Mrs Fialdes, C.V T. Easton, J. McSaveny, and / Constable Woods gave evidence in , v connection with the charge of drunkenness. • -' The accused, McKegney, gave evidence on bis own behalf in .. which he denied using the language complained of. The justices said that the weight of evidence was against accused and he would be convicted on the charge of using obscene language and fined in default 21 days imprisoumeht. Constable Woods then asked that a conviction only be recorded in the case of drunkenness and this was done.

Time was asked in which to pay the fine but the police opposed the application and it was refused, but the money was afterwards paid. .
