The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, April 26TH., 1913. HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION.
Thh election of two members to represent Foxton borough on the Foxtou Harbour Board will take place on Wednesday next. For the two vacancies three candidates have been nominated, two of whom are well-known residents, and one is not so fortunate in this respect. In reference to Mr Hennessy, who is at present Chairman of the Board, we need say little, because Harbour Board and Hennessy are, at least locally, syuon)'mous terms. That his election is assured goes without saying, for we cannot conceive of any one so ungrateful as to deprive Mr Hennessy of the honour of securing for the port its just dues. Still there is much yet to be accomplished, and it is necessary that he should have associated with him on the Board men of experience and possessed of a knowledge of the port. In Mr F. E. Jenks the electors have a man of ripe experience in local public affairs, and one who has filled the highest office it is in their power to confer, and one who has served them intelligently and faithfully in almost every public capacity. He possesses a strong personality and a clear insight into the requirements of the port. By the way, it is to be regretted that Mr Jenks did not allow himself to be nominated for a seat on the Council at the present juncture. However, we can with confidence urge his claims upon the electors, Mr Harvey, the other candidate, is to be commended for placing his services at the disposal of the electors, but, being a comparative stranger in our midst, we know little or nothing of his qualifications for the position. The electors will also record their votes for two candidates to represent the Manawatu district on the Wellington Harbour Board. The three candidates are Messrs Cobbe and Cohen (sitting members), and Mr Elliott, of Palmerston N.
