NO IMPRINT ON CARDS.
Christchurch, April 25.
Peter Grant was fined £ 2O, with costs, for assisting to publish doubles betting cards without an imprint. The fact that two envelopes containing cards were stamped with an automatic stamping machine leased to Grant by the post office was held by the Magistrate to be sufficient connection of Grant with the publication of the cards. In two other instances the envelopes had been stamped with an adhesive stamp, and there was nothing to connect defendant with them.
SUDDEN FATAL EARTHFALL. Hamilton, April 25. A labourer named Kirby, a single man, aged about 27, was killed by a fall of earth at Leslie's Gully this afternoon, where excavation work is progressing. He was quickly dug out, but it was found that a stone had struck his temple, and he died a few minutes afterwards. FORESTRY COMMISSION. Auckland, April 25. The Forestry Commission proceeded south by the mid-day express. Some members go to Mokau, via Te Kuiti, and others to Taumarunui and down the Wanganui River.
