The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, April 24TH., 1913.
On Wednesday next the electors of Foxton who possess the necessary qualification, and whose names appear on the District Electors Eist —copies of which may be obtained from the Town Clerk — will be called upon to elect (1) a Mayor (2) nine Councillors (3) two members of the Foxton Harbour Board (4) two members to represent Manawatu district on the Wellington Harbour Board.
Each elector will receive four voting papers of distinctive colour, and will strike out the name or names of the candidates for whom they desire not to vote. The polling booth will be at the Council Chambers, and the polling hours between 9 am. and 7 p.m.
The total number of names on the roll is 1,038, and after allowing for absentees, etc., between 700 and 800 votes should be recorded. In the past many electors have failed to appreciate the privileges they enjoy by abstaining from voting. Such indifference is regrettable. Every elector should exercise the franchise as a duty. Further, one should exercise an intelligent vote. This can only be done by a careful scrutiny of the candidates and a conviction that they are men whom one could trust to administer one’s own private affairs. Too many electors allow the man in the street to do the thinking for them, instead of carefully reviewing the situation for themselves. If people would only exercise their God-given brains on these subjects, our public and national life would be elevated to a much higher standard, It is a laudable desire on the part of any man to serve his fellows, provided that such an one is actuated by motives other than empty ambition or a desire for notoriety. If electors will think for themselves before exercising their votes, we need have no fear for the result of Wednesday’s poll.
