BOROUGH FINANCES.
THE ANNUAL STATE-
MENTS,
At last night’s Council meeting the Borough Treasurer (Mr Alfe Fraser) submitted statements of' the receipts and expenditure of the borough for the financial year ended March 31st, 19x3. These statements are subject to audit but can be taken as correct. Below .4* we give a brief resume of the different accounts.
The general account opened with a debit balance of 13s > 1 id, and closed with a debit of ' amounted to 19s lod, the ; chief items being : Rates and subsidy ,£1389 3s 6d, licenses rents 9s, refunds .£l6B 10s 2d, fees ,£46 15s and dog registra- > tiou ,£35 17s 6d. The expenditure was made up chiefly of: Maintenance roads, streets and drains £762 4s 6d, salaries and office expenses 2s 3d, street ! lighting 17s rod, printing and advertising 6s nd, interest and sinking fund Chambers ,£l2O, amount voted toTf Beach road loan account £BB 17s Bd, licensinig expenses 18s 8d and insurance 12s 2d. The library account shows a credit balance of £5 9s id, after taking, into account a vote from the general account of receipts including the vote totalled is 6d. ' The reserves account opened with a credit of ,£l3 17s 7d and during the year £‘loo is 3d was received for rents making the total receipts 18s rod. The expenditure was ,£32 16s sd, the chief items being : Secretary’s salary £ls, plants 7S7d and labour and material £5 17s. The cemetery account which opened with a balance on the credit side of 4s 7d, closed with a credit of £2 10s gd. The receipts were: Sale of sites rent of reserve ,£l7 and burial fees £g 1 os. The expenditure was: Secretary’s salary £ ls, sexton’s fees 4d, sexton salary £7 10s and bank fees 1 os.
The receipts on the sanitation account, including a balance brought forward from last year ofV 14s 4d, were £371 6s 4d and the expenditure £320 6s 4d, leaving a credit balance in this account of £sl. The chief item of expenditure was wages £291 10s, As the gas works account will be of special interest to we will give the details supplied in full. The receipts were : G,as sales for lighting £1036 13s id, for heating and power £366 3s gd, fittings £521 18s nd, tar £52 ns 6d, coke £95 10s 2d and coal £2 15s sd, total £2075 12s rod. Expenditure : Balance 31/12/12 £lB2 139 9d, coal £602 12s iod, pipes and fittings £428 4s 2d, meters £B3 as Bd, labour and working expenses £524, plant £62 10s, services ,£1251340, fitting £Bl ns, new mains and material £l3B 2s 6d, labour £IOO 10s nd, pipe shed and retorts ,£l3 os gd, printing £l6 is 6d, engine repairs, oil, etc., £l7 os gd, freight, cartage and wharfage £lB 14s 3d, tools £6 9s gd and miscellaneous ,£3l 14s 2d, total £2161 lossd, leaving a debit balance of £BS 17s yd. As the account opened with a debit of £lB2 13s gd it will be seen that there is a credit on the actual working of something over £9O. Y The interest and sinking fund -in ' connection with this account amounts to £715 so it will be seen that the gas works last year were about £620 off paying their way.
The town hall account at the end of the year showed a credit of £668 12s 3d, £353 17s 4d of which was brought forward from the previous year, leaving a credit on the year’s working of £314 15s id. The receipts, including the balance brought forward from the previous year, totalled £2381 14s rod, the chief items of which were: Picture shows £l7xl 14s, skating rink £124 14s 6d and hall and supper room rents £137 5s 6d. The expenditure was made up chiefly of: Wages £347 19s, iilm hire, posters and tickets £327 14s 4d. interest £lB9, Kirkland, balance of contract £l4B 6s 6d, gas £lls xos, purchase of section £IOO, gas works contract £B3 8s 6d, skates £76 123 4d, music £75 16s 6d, printing and advertising £62 8s and insurance £59 8s 4d. The position is that during the year a clear profit of £314 15s id was made on this account after paying something between £3OO and £4OO for purchase of section, engine and dynamo and installa* tion of gas etc., all of which will not be recurring. It will be seen from these figures that the profit on the actual working of the halt for the year was between £6oo and £7OO which is indeed a highly satisfactory position.
