HOSPITAL BOUNDARIES.

A deputation from the Horowhenua County Council and the Levin . Borough Council, introduced by Mr J. Robertson, M.P., waited upon the Hon. R. H. Rhodes, Minister in charge of Hospitals and Charitable Aid, yesterday, with a request that t,he Wirokino and Tokomaru ridings, and the Levin borough, be included in the Palmerston North hospital district, instead of Wellington. Mr G. N. Stephenson, chairman of the , Horowhenua County Council, said that a large part of the -population was’ nearer Palmerston, and the nearest portion of the district (for which separation was asked), to Wellington, was fifty-six miles, against thirty-two miles to Palmerston. Shannon was sixty-nine miles from Wellington, against nineteen miles from Palmerston.

Mr B. R. Gardener, Mayor of Levin, hoped that the Minister would study i the question from a humanitarian point of view. Levin was twenty-seven miles from Palmerston and fifty-six from Wellington. Train arrangements were better from Levin to Palmerston than to Wellington. In regard to the Children’s Hospital, they should have an institution from which mothers could return in the one day. The population of the county was rapidly increasing, and an alteration of arrangements was necessary.

Mr F. W. Venn said the part of the county he represented was only ten miles from Palmerston. He declared he could put his finger on half-a-dozen cases where good, useful settlers had died through the awkward arrangements.

The Minister, in reply, said he thought they would have suggested that the whole county should be added. There was no power under the Act to divide the county. He said he would have to see how far it would affect other districts, who might also require alterations if this were granted. In this particular instance they had a good case, and there was no objection on the part of the other Hospital Board. He would go into the matter very carefully, and see if it were possible to introduce legislation to meet the case.
