THE MAYORALTY.
MR. STILES DECIDES TO STAND. CR. CHRYSTALL RETIRES. Mr G. H. Stiles has yielded to the pressure brought to bear upon him to contest the Mayoralty, and elsewhere in this iss.-.e publishes an announcement to this effect. Cr Chrystail, who intended to offer himself as a candidate, has withdrawn in favour of Mr Stiles. The contest will, therefore, rest between Messrs Stiles and Harvey. Mr Stiles will address the burgesses at a public meeting at a later date, when he will deal with matters of interest to electors. SMOKE CONCERT. A smoke concert, organised by Mr Harvey's committe, was held in the Masonic Hall, on Tuesday evening, for the purpose of introducing Mr J. L. Harvey, who is a candidate for the Mayoralty, to the citizens of Foxton. In the unavoidable absence of Dr. Adams, Mr Percy Lumsden occupied the chair and briefly outlined the reasons for holding the function, and introduced Mr Harvey to those present. In addressing the meeting, Mr Harvey said that his candidature for the Mayoralty was not of his own seeking- He had been asked by a deputation to allow himself to be nominated, and as he bad a little time to spare land aways took an interest in the welfare of the town of which he was a resident, he had acceded to the request. If elected he would do all in his power to push Foxton ahead. He gave a brief outline of his policy stating that he would favour the installation of a water and drainage scheme, extension of the gas mains, but no reduction in the price of gas until the works were a paying concern, reduction in prices of picture entertainments and the improvement of the streets and footpaths ; he would also do all possible to have the local harbour placed under the control of the Foxton Harbour Board. Cr Richmond moved and Mr A. Edwards seconded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence in Mr Harvey, which was carried by acclamation.
Mr E. Dunn, oue ot the Progressive Party’s candidates also briefly addressed the meeting, dealing principally with the LeviuMartou railway question, in which, he said, more interest should be shown by the local Borough Council. He stated that he would deal exhaustively with the policy of the Progressive Party iu about eight days time. During the evening a number of vocal and other items were contributed by various people, and after passing a vote of thanks to these for their assistance, the meeting was brought to a close.
