THE PEA RIFLE.
Blenheim, March 19
A shooting mishap occurred yesterday, when James Neil, whilst working at a flaxmill, was struck down by a bullet from a pea rifle. The bullet came from across the river, passed through a canvas partition, and struck Neil in the back, near the left shoulder. He was taken to the hospital, and is now in a serious condition.
Later in the day the police arrested two boys—Frederick Neilsen and William Attwood, each about 16 years of age—on a charge of shooting Neil. It is stated that the boys were firing from a pea rifle at a can on a post, and one shot missed the can and struck Neil. On the application of the police, the boys were remanded for a week.
Neil is aged 35, and has a wife aud four children.
