A CHARGE OF BIGAMY.

Auckland. March 15. yAt the Police Court, Harry; Ford, a hotel porter, residing at Hamilton, was charged that at Auckland, in August last, he committed bigamy, going through a form of marriage witb£|Kathleeu Kelly, he being already married. Evidence given was to the effect r that accused was married in St. Paul’s Church, Canterbury, on February 12, 1908, to Beatrice Newton, who was present in court. Subsequently, he went to Newcastle, and returned eight months later, when a child was born. He again left New Zealand. He had written to his wife, and sent her money ; but she did not see him again till February last, in Hamilton.

Accused, in a statement produced by the police, did not deny the allegations, but stated there were 1 peculiar circumstances connected with his first marriage. He reserved his defence, being committed for trial.
