The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, March 13TH., 1913. TRAMWAY EXTENSION.
A meeting of representatives of local bodies, called by the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce, was held at Palmerston on Monday to discuss the question of the proposed extension of the Saudou tramway to connect with the Main Trunk line, and the effect which such an extension might have on Palmerston and the district for which it is the centre. The only outside district which thought the conference of sufficient importance to send a representative was Feilding, and Mr Cobbe, the delegate said the Feilding Chamber was favourable to the extension of the tramway, and saw no reason why it should be opposed, but they would oppose any deviation of the railway from Palmerston. A general discussion ensued and a lengthy motion was cast out in favour of the following amendment, moved by Mr Cobbe and seconded by Mr
Johnston: “That this meeting does not offer any objection to the extension of Sandon tram line to the Marton railway line, but would strongly oppose any railway deviation which would have the effect of side tracking Palmerston North or Feilding.’’ It is satisfactory to note that the whole of the districts are now in agreement that the tramway should be connected with the Main Trunk line at Marton and the County Council should not now experience any difficulty in getting Parliament to sanction the connection.
