THE WANGANUI WHARF.

BOARD WANTS CONTROL.

At the present time the Wanganui wharf is worked by the Railway Department on behalf of the Wanganui Harbour Board, the Railway Department charging the Board a certain percentage for collecting the wharfages, etc. The Board has been endeavouring for the past two years to resume control of the wharf, as the department’s management has not been satisfactory either to the Board or to the shipping interests. At their last monthly meeting the matter was again discussed, and a deputation representing the shippers was received which gave instances of the unsatisfactory manner in which the wharf was being worked by the Department. The chairman, Mr J, B. Murray, said that the matter of taking over the wharf had been laid before Mr Herries (Minister of Railways), who had gone through the correspondence to verify the Board’s statements. Mr Harries had said he was willing to abrogate the Department’s claims and make a fresh start so soon as the Board gave him a definite statement of what it wanted. After some discussion it was decided that a statement be drawn up by the Works Committee, and that the matter be pushed energeti* cally, with a view to taking over the wharf at the earliest possible moment.
