DOCTORS AND FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.
Matters between the Lyttelton doctors and the friendly societies at that port have not been working smoothly. At the commencement of last month the societies advertised for applications for tbe position of friendly societies’ doctor, and from eleven applications, Dr. Stewart, of the Wellington Hospital, was appointed. An advertisement had appeared in the Christchurch papers, warning medical practitioners against applying for any appointment advertised by the friendly societies of Lyttelton, and adding that it would be to their advantage to communicate in the first instance with the secretary of the British Medical Association of Christchurch.
The dispute arose over a demand by the previous medical officers for an increase of fees from 14s to 21s for each financial member per annum, and for accouchements from ,£1 11s 6d to £3 3s. The societies were willing to fix the respective amounts at 14s and £2 2s, with a right of private practice and guaranteed a minimum of .£3OO per annum. One of the medical officers, when interviewed, stated that the matter was one for the British Medical Association, which he understood, was going to take up the whole question of the payment of doctors by the New Zealand friendly societies.
