ROWING.
At the Wanganui regatta on Thursday, Mr H. McKegney, of Foxton, secured second place in the Maiden Sculls, and was third in the Junior Sculls. In the Maiden Sculls, one mile, there were five starters, Prideaux (Onion B. C.), Slippe (Wanganui R. C.), Caldwell (Aramoho B. C.), McKegney (Wanganui B. C.) and Cain (Clifton R. C.). From the start Caldwell went to the front, McKegney getting away badly. He soon settled down, however, and when a third of the course had been covered, was making up lost ground in good style. At the bridge he was fouled by Cain, and was forced into the bank, thus losing from two to three lengths. Caldwell was now leading by fully four lengths, and McKegney, upon lighting himself, put in a very strong challenge, but the distance to the winning post was too short to make up the ground lost, and Caldwell passed the post almost a length ahead ol the Foxton man, who was then gaining rapidly. Slipper was third, being six lengths behind McKegney, and the others did not finish. The Junior Sculls, one mile, was also contested by five starters, Sharpe, McKegney, Caldwell, Banks and. Cain, This race was won by Sharpe, Caldwell three lengths away being second, and McKegney, a further three lengths back, third. In this event, MeKegney was apparently troubled by the choppy nature of the water. Banks was forced under the willows by Cain, and had to retire. Time, 7 minutes.
