WIFE DESERTER AND CATTLE THIEF.
RECEIVES THREE YEARS.
Invercargill, March 7.
At the Supreme Court, William John Richards, aged 44, charged with stealing a bicycle at Waiauawa, a mob of cows at Edendale, and a mob of steers at Clinton, was sentenced tq one year on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently, with detention for reformative treatment for a period hot exceeding five years. Prisoner arrived from England a year ago* He deserted his wife and two children,' and had been going under various aliases. The Crown Prosecutor stated he had in the Bank of New Zealand, and £B7 in the Post Office Savings Bank. When arrested he possessed a loaded revolver, which he said he intended using if interfered with. The police described him as a cunning ruffian.
