The Manawatu Herald. Thursday,, March 6TH., 1913. HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

The; local Horticultural Society is to be congratulated upon the success of its fifth Autumn Show, held yesterday. In the past the autumn show has been a two days affair, 1 but the committee decided to restrict it to one day this year, on the ground that the extra day imposed too great a sacrifice on the part of a hard-working committee and the results did not justify an extension. Further, the exhibits in many classes,, as may be supposed, lost their natural beauty and there were evidences of staleness in other directions. The attendance of the public, however, was well maintained on the second night and patrons were catered for in the way of competitions, etc. From a financial point ot view the one day show may show a falling off* otherwise there was a marked improvement on former exhibitions both in quality and quantity of exhibits. Since the inception of the society—and we note, by the way, that the original members are just as enthusiastic for the welfare of the society as ever —a marked improvement is evidenced locally in the cultivation of flowers, fruit

and vegetables and improved methods have been adopted. The society has more than justified its existence r.s an educational institution. That Foxton soil can produce tfie choicest fruits from the vegetable kingdom, compatible with the climate, equally with any part of the district, is borne out by the statements of the visiting judges, who speak with authority and knowledge. Messrs Just and Mayo informed us that the standard of excellence in the fruit, vegetable and cut bloom exhibits was higher than at similar shows in other parts of the district, and this despite the fact that growers are minus a water supply. The society is entitled to all the practical sympathy that residents can bestow upon if.
