STATE SCHOOL EXCURSION AND PICNIC.
The State School excursion and
to the Ashhurst Domain took place yesterday in ideal weather, although the sky was ''"ercast early in the morning. Dong before the train was timed to leave, the platform an 4 street leading to the station, presented a very animated appearance. From every direction little children with beaming faces, and neatly clad, were hurrying to catch the train. Parents arrived carrying wellfilled picnic hampers, and it was not long before every available seat iu the nine carriages was filled and a number .of excursionists could find standing room only. It was a record picnic gathering from Foxton, numbering about seven hundred. The special only stopped to pick up a few picnicers at Motuiti aud Himataugi and brief stops were made at Rangiotu and Palmerston. On arrival at Ashhurst, the crowd wended its way from the station to the pretty native bush, near the racecourse, and private parties selected suitable spots in the Domain as temporary campiug grounds. The whole of tb® teaching staff and committee assisted the caterer in regaling the youngsters with a preliminary meal, and the bugles sounded aud a start was made with the sports programme. The races were supervised by the committee and teaching staff and some exciting and amusing finishes were witnessed. The married women’s race brought out a good field and resulted m a dead heat between Mesdames Clelaud and McCarthy, hi the run-off the latter just managed to beat her opponent. Miss McHardie annexed the female teachers’ race while Mr Gabites succeeded in breasting the rope ahead of his fellow male teacers. The committeemen’s race was keenly contested and the Chairman managed to use his legs to better advantage than his colleagues. When half the distance was covered, Messrs Coley and Henderson were leading, and going strong, aud their activity would put many younger fellows in the shade. Out of a good field, Miss Walker won the young ladies race. All kinds of games were indulged in throughout the aay. Messrs Jackson and Gabites, with Mr Win. Rimmer as guide, took a number of senior scholars during the afternoon, to visit some limestone caves up the gorge. The going was somewhat strenuous, aud Mr Jackson decided to bring back a portion of the party, while the others completed the journey. Some fine specimens of rock, and plant life were obtained and the expedition was much appreciated. The committee provided, through the caretaker, ample milk and hot water together with a number of cases of fruit and the caterer, Mr Walls, left no grounds for complaint in regard to refreshments—of which there was a superabundance. Ferning parties scoured the gorge and came back loaded with some flue plants. The whole party wended its way to the train a little after 5 o’clock thoroughly satisfied with the day’s pleasure. It is pleasing to note that not a minor accident marred the day’s enjoyment, although a few young wandering spirits created a little anxiety, but they appeared well able to look after themselves. The train lett with its happy, if tired, freight at 6.10 p.m.—arriving at Foxton just before 8 o’clock. The committee aud teaching staff are to be congratulated upon the success of the gathering, and the careful attention given to details, and we are asked to specially thank the parents aud public for their liberal subscriptions towards ■ defraying the expense of the outing.
