THE MATING OF LYDIA.
A NOTABLE NOVEL BY AN AUSTRALIAN AUTHORESS. It will be news to many of our readers to learn that Mrs Humphry Ward, the noted authoress, is an Australian by birth. She was bom in Hobart, Tasmania, JBSL and was the eldest daughter of- Thomas Arnold, son of the famous Doctor Arnold of Rugby. Mrs Humphry Ward’s newest novel is entitled “The Mating of Lydia,” and has begun to run serially in the February issue of “Everylady’s Journal” now before us. It is fitting that this potable story by an Australian authoress should appear- exclusively in so popular an Australian woman’s magazine as “Everylady’s Journal.” In beautiful Cumberland—that land of ballade and romance—
Mrs Ward has created Lydia Penfold, the glorious heroine of “ The Mating of Lydia.” Living in the mountains —among the beauties of Nature—she grows into young womanhood possessed of the loveliness that has surrounded her. Then Faversham enters —a fine, manly man—and a charming love story develops. Our readers will certainly love Lydia and admire Faversham. The February issue of “Everylady’s Journal” is rich in many other features besides Mrs Ward’s new serial. These cover scores of fashion designs, five free patterns, short stories, many illustrated articles, and some splendid domestic and practical series, such as, “Why I married a Wealthy Husband,” “Fancywork for Summer Days,” “Common Sense about the Baby,” “New Ways in Beauty,” etc. We confidently recommend this issue of “Everylady’s Journal” to our women readers as a fine sixpenn’orth.
