Constable Pain had occasion to arrest a young native who was under the influence of liquor, and immediately he was set upon by a number of other natives. The constable held on to his prisoner for some time, but be was eveneually knocked down on the footpath, and kicked and beaten. A big crowd gathered round, and several men went to the constable’s assistance. After a severe struggle, Constable Pain, aided by civilians, managed to arrest four ot the natives, and they were taken to the lock-up. The sequel was their appearance at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Sunny Moa was charged with having been drunk and disorderly, and with resisting arrest; Eugene Waetford and George Solomon with threatening behaviour, and Mihi Morgan with inciting Sunny Moa to resist arrest. The justices said it was a disgraceful affair. Sunny Moa, who had. a previous conviction against him for resisting the police, was fined in default two months’ hard labour. Fines were inflicted on the others as follows: Mihi Morgan Eugene Waetford and George Solomon £l.
