THE SLAUGHTERMEN.
SOME PROGRESS NOTES. Pauikrston, Feb. 6, The Longburn freezing works start killing again on Monday at 8 a.o. The company has been advertising for slaughtermen, and has been successful. Gisborne, Feb. 6. The possible attitude oi waterside workers in regard to the employment of free labour on the slaughtering boards at the freezing works has been much discussed of late, and an intense light is thrown on the matter by the following resolution, which was carried unanimously at a large meeting of Gisborne waterside workers tonight : “That this meeting accords the Slaughtermen’s Union their heartiest support, and in the future will give all the support possible without infringing the Gisborne waterside workers’ agreement.” This is interpreted to mean that the waterside workers may possibly refuse to handle “free labour” meat. But farmers have agreed to do the work, if necessary.
Hastings, Feb. 6
The strikers are very reticent regarding what took place at last night’s meeting and no information is obtainable. It is understood that the men were unanimously in favour ot standing by the demands, and are confident that the companies will ultimately agree to the new terms asked for.
Twelve men went on tbe boards at Pakipaki to day. Applications are coming in from outside districts, but preference is to be given to local men. The 28 men slaughtered 800 sheep in a short day at Tomoana, and their work is improving. Pauvikrston, Feb, 7.
Tbe Tougburn freezing works are re-starting on Monday with a full board of free labourers.
