The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, January 28th., 1913. SOME POPULATION FIGURES.

The New Zealand Year Book shows that the population of Wellington city is 64,372 ; Auckland city has 40,536; Christchurch, 53,116 ; Dunedin, 41,529. Thus Wellington, the Empire city, is a long way ahead of all others in population. When suburbs are taken into account, however, Wellington is only third on the list of largest cities. Greater Auckland is the largest with a population of 102,676. This includes practically every borough or settlement anywhere near Auckland :—eight of the boroughs are —Birkenhead, 1703 ; Devenport, 7,041 (a very robust “ suburb ! ”); Newmarket, 2,780 ; Grey Lynn, 7,454 (another healthy little suburb!); Parnell, 5,465 ; Mount Eden, 9,381 (a borough nearly as populace as Napier city, but still an Auckland “suburb,”) Mount Albert 6,700; Northcote, 1,422, and other “suburbs” 20,194. Auckland is therefore a little mother with a pretty big family, a number whose members will presently decline to be included in the general term of Auckland’s suburbs. These suburbs account for . 62,140 of the population claimed by Auckland citizens. There is also “ Greater Wellington,” but the Empire City only claims Onslow 1,789, Karori 1,449, Miramar 1,630, Eastbou:ne 560. and other small places, 929, as its suburbs. Greater Christchurch takes in Woolston 3,412, Spreydon 3,286, New Brighton, 1,696, and Sumner 1,751, other suburbs assisting to the extent of 16,932. Greater Dunedin includes six boroughs, viz, Maori Hill 2,216. Mornington 4,679, Roslyn 5,744, St. Kilda 4U37. West Harbour 1,651, Green Island 1,872, and other suburbs 2,409, Foxton’s population is 1,637 and Levin 1,608 ; Palmerston North 10,999, Feilding 3,161 ; nui’s borough population 10,929 and with suburbs 14,702.
