The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, January 23, 1913. VICTORIA PARK.
Victoria Park presents a very neglected appearance. Numbers of people wend their way there to seek the shade of the trees, but beyond this pleasure there is nothing attractive to the eye. The cycling track and oval are overgrown with weeds—of course there is no further use for them since the once famous Athletic Club has become defunct. Even the flagstaff, once the pride of Main Street, looks like a storm battered mast on a coastal wreck. Victoria Park is a nice sounding title that a stranger associates in his mind’s eye with charming flower plots, pretty and shady walks beneath avenues of native creepers, lakelets upon whose glassy surface the swan and paradise duck sport among the giant water lillies, etc. The park could be so transformed, but it must be a municipal work of the future, after the water and drainage schemes have been consummated. Still the Council’s Reserves Committee should not allow the park to be neglected. Suitable shrubs should be periodically planted, and a beautifying scheme mapped out for future completion. We hope the hint is well-timed.
