LOCAL WATERSIDE WORKERS

AND CEMENT CARGOES

Eocal waterside workers object to unload cement at the same rate as coal or general merchandise although the award makes no distinction—is 6d pet hour being the price fixed. A Palmerston firm are expecting a cargo of cement at the local port and the men gave notice that unless they were paid is 8d per hour they would uot unload it. It was pointed out by a representative of the Shipping Col that the award rate for unloading would have to be adhered to otherwise the cargo would not be accepted aud the cement would have to come through by rail. The Shipping Co. made it clear that it would not be a parly to going behind the award. The agent for the cement, we are informed, was quite willing to pay the extra 2d per hour, but the shipping firm would uot sanction this. lu conversation with one of the waterside workers, we were informed that the men had no objeC' tion to others than themselves unloading at is 6d per hour and they were sorry for the agent of the cement. Our informant stated, turther, that it took four hours to unload a shipment of cement from the Waverley, whereas, a cargo of coal took seven hours. The cemem destroyed their clothes and cracked their hands —aud they shied off it.
