HORSES GREAT LEAP.
AN EXTRAORDINARY ACCIDENT.
The opening event at the Towamba (N.S.W.) races last week was marred by an extraordinary accident, which resulted itt the destruction of a valuable horse and the miraculous escape Irom death of its rider, Edward Young. The Towamba course is nothing better than a rough track cut through the bush, and the many obstacles that lay in the way of the jockeys are a sufficient test of their skill and pluck. When the horses went to the post for the opening event, Eulalie was leading the belting, and judging by the show she made for the first few furlongs of the race, says a Sydney paper, it looked as if she would have an easy win. Passing the river bank, however, the horse became unmanageable, and despite the attempts of her jockey to keep her on the course, the animal leaped over the bank, a distance of 30ft. Young managed to throw himself irom the saddle during the Bight, and fortunately lauded on a sandy bed. He was unconscious when picked up, but otherwise escaped without being injured.
